Diversity is a beautiful thing. We can learn so much from each other and as counselors, we have an opportunity to spread diversity with our students. The first artifact I chose for Respect for the Diversity of Others is the Career Counseling for All brochure. I chose this because I feel it represents how the school, community, family and students can come together to help every student succeed no matter their differences. Appreciation of who you are and where you come from is a key factor in building bonds, friendships, work ethic and self-confidence. The second artifact is Social and Cultural Diversity Analysis which describes different aspects of cultural diversity.
Brings in our community awareness and diversity to our students
Builds students' confidence and self-awareness of their differences and strengths
There are many things a SCIT can do to bring cultural awareness to the classroom. Learning about students' backgrounds, family, traditions and culture can help to understand the differences we have in our community. Allowing guest speakers to come in and speak to the students makes them aware of those differences as well. It is important to know the staff, family and community members' backgrounds to ensure respect for their culture. Communicating with them in a professional and proper way is essential and builds a strong and collaborative relationship that can bring success for our students.
