Welcome to Year 3 2021/22

"You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So... get on your way!" ― Dr. Seuss

Staff - Class teacher - Mrs Rannard Teaching Assistants - Mrs Roscoe, Miss Twiss Student teacher - Mr Logue

The children have begun this year with a very positive attitude and a willingness to learn new things and achieve personal goals. They have shown enthusiasm and commitment to the challenges of Year 3 so far and I know they will continue to do so in the coming months.

Reading - Children should be reading a little every night and answering questions about the text to check their understanding. The children may change their reading book on a Wednesday. Even if they have not finished their book please return the reading record so we can see that your child has been reading at home and enter them into the Reading Champion draw.

Water Bottles - It is important that your child has some water to drink throughout the day. Please ensure your child has their name on their water bottle in school. This should be brought home each night to be washed and returned containing fresh water each day.

Uniform - PLEASE ensure ALL uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

P.E. – P.E. will take place every Friday. The children are to come to school in their outdoor P.E. kit (indoor weather dependent) and when we do gymnastics (Autumn 2) the children are required to wear their green/black shorts or cycle shorts which can be worn under their outdoor kit. The outdoor kit should be a plain dark tracksuit (preferably black) white Summerhill T-shirt and trainers.

Homework – This will be put on Google Classroom. The children will get 10 spellings each week ready for a test on a Friday and should be practising their spellings every night.

Times Tables - It is imperative that the children in Year 3 know their 2,3,5,8,10 x times tables , I cannot stress how important the tables are in every area of maths and they need to be able to recall this information with accuracy and speed. The children need to practise these so they can recite them quickly in any order and also know the corresponding division facts. Top Marks HIt the Button is a great resource for this. There will be a times table test on a Friday.

Medication – Any medication required to be administered during the school day can only be done if:

  • It has been prescribed by a medical professional

  • It is in the packaging with the dispensary label

  • Required forms have been completed via the school office

If your child is asthmatic, we need to have a reliever inhaler at school. We are not permitted to give children over the counter medicines e.g. Calpol. All medication must be delivered directly to the school office for administration

Over the counter medications cannot and will not be administered.

Attendance and Punctuality - Please ensure your child attends school and please only keep them off if absolutely necessary. The children must be in the classroom ready to learn not later than 8.55am. The doors will be open from 8.45am. Holidays during school time will not be authorised and parents will be referred for a penalty notice should they take their child out of school.

Monies into school - all school based activities can be paid using SIMSpay - this is our preferred method. If you cannot do this then money must be sent in a sealed envelope clearly named and labelled. Please keep up to date with what’s going on in our school - use our website and twitter account!

A very warm welcome to Year 3's Class Page.

I hope you will enjoy looking at Year 3's Class Page to find out all the exciting things the children are learning about this year. It is lovely to see the children with such a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and I hope they will make some lasting memories whilst in Year 3.

"There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island and best of all, you can enjoy these riches everyday of your life."

What we are learning about:

This term our topic for History is 'The Stone Age and for Geography

we are learning about 'Angry Earth'.

Water Bottles

It is important that your child is hydrated throughout the day. Please ensure your child has a labelled reusable water bottle in school. This should be brought home each night to be washed and returned containing fresh water each day. In addition, it is important that your child only brings water in their water bottle.

Uniform

Please ensure ALL uniform is clearly labelled with your child’s name.

P.E.

Children take part in PE every week. This can be inside and outside. The indoor kit consists of green shorts, white Summerhill t-shirt and black pumps. The outdoor kit is a navy or black tracksuit and trainers. Please ensure that PE kits are clearly labelled and are kept in school at all times. We will send PE kits home at the end of each half term, for it to be washed and ready to be returned for the next half term. Please ensure that any earrings are removed for PE.

Make and Bake

Each term we would ask for a contribution of £3 Make and Bake Money please.

Medication

We can only administer medication that has been prescribed for your child. This will only be done once you have completed the required forms from the school office. If your child is asthmatic, we need to have a reliever inhaler at school. We are not permitted to give children over the counter medicines eg. Calpol. All medication must be delivered directly to the school office for administration.

Attendance and Punctuality

Please ensure your child attends school and please only keep them off if absolutely necessary. Also, the children must be on the playground ready for the school bell at 8.55am. This enables the children to be settled in class, ready for the school day to start. It is not nice for the children to be late or off unnecessarily as they miss out on what is happening in school.

Website and Permission forms

Our website is updated regularly with news of what the children have been doing and the topics and Creative Learning. Photos are put on regularly. If you have any changes to the permission that you may/may not have given for photographs on the website or in newspapers, please let me know and we will amend our records.

Reading

We are very fortunate to have a fantastic reading corner and we are looking to continue to build an environment that will beckon your child into the wonderful world of reading. It is a lifelong hobby which can help build the imagination, vocabulary and education of your child. To foster this love of reading the children will continue to have guided reading sessions each day. Each child works in a small group reading and answering questions and then writing about it.

Homework

Homework in Year 3 will be focused on spellings, times tables and reading. As we start each new history topic we would also like the children to research facts and details will be sent out separately of the topic we will be studying. It is important at home to practice the 2,3,4, 5 & 8x tables. The children need to know both the multiplication and division facts and we will have a test each week on a Monday.

Spellings will be sent out on a Friday and we will have a weekly test the following Friday.

As I am sure you are aware, as well as being an enjoyable pastime, reading impacts hugely on children’s writing ability and general learning. To support this please continue to read with your child every evening and ask questions about the text to develop their level of understanding.
