Charcoal and Ink Drawing

The subject of my drawing is a large tree with the sky in the background that was taken from the bottom of the tree. I made the work by drawing in sections, I used 1x1 inch squares to draw my project one square at a time using charcoal and shading. I really liked this picture because of the perspective that it was taken from, I like how in the picture it accentuated the trunk of the tree and exposed the underside of the leaves and branches.

The main two techniques that I used are, using squares to break up the project into smaller pieces and make it easier to get the proportions right, as well as shading and mixing to give the charcoal a smoother more fluid look. I did end up doing the project by every two or three squares to save time as well as using different sized mixing tools to help me mix and shade easier.

This is a tree that I took a photo of when I was at my camp, this relates to me because that area is very special to me and I have a lot of memories there. I did make one big mistake, and used only charcoal in my drawing, I should have incorporated some ink into it but was crunched for time and only used charcoal, I this the drawing would have looked better if it had been done with both materials.
