84 color design

I chose a sunrise over an ocean with with the sun rays shining out and a lighthouse in front of it as my setting for my painting. I used graphite on the canvas to sketch out my design and then used and mixed acrylic paint to paint the colors. The goal of the painting was to use twelve different colors and make 3 shades and 3 tints of each color to end up as 84 different shades of colors.

The main technique that was used in this painting was color mixing, to make the different shades and tints, I had to use different color mixes to create different alternate colors. I was also working on making my brush strokes smoother to give the painting a more solid look, I also achieved this by trying to add multiple coats of paint to bring out the color. I changed the way I used up the extra space, I was originally going to use other colors and make different shades and tints for them but I ended up just putting in a color that I had already used in the extra space.

I really enjoy the ocean and I was inspired to make this painting because of some memories of pretty views from the ocean. I think that my artwork could have been much stronger if I had taken more time to put more layer of paint on. I think that the paint is too thin and shows some of the white of the canvas and takes away from the colors and makes it less striking.
