Sustained Investigation #9

Title: Untitled

Size: 11'' x 14''

Statement:

This piece shows a naked woman being surrounded by high-heeled legs. I wanted their to be a connection and a push and pull feel between the hands, woman, and the legs. The colors in the background are supposed to be contrasting and vibrant to bring the human figures to light. I didn't entirely mean for this to happen, but the reds in the background could be seen as representing female anatomy. Overall, I wanted people to be a little weirded out by this piece and therefore think about it more. For me, I think this piece shows norms of femininity and the place that woman are held in in society.

I used acrylic paint on a canvas. I had never used acrylic before and I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone. I'm proud of how it came out considering it was my first time using the material.

My original idea was to have a woman bending forward, being pulled by a hand and touching a high heeled leg. I also wanted to have other high heeled legs around the page. I was also going to add eyes cut out from magazines around the paper, but I decided to use a burst of color instead. I then decided to have the woman held up by a hand to further the thought of the position woman are held to in society. As I added the figures, the colors evolved in the background. I didn't want any harsh lines between them, so as I added more colors I faded them into the previous ones.

As a next step for this project, I would add another pair of legs coming up from the right bottom corner. And I would add more contrast and depth in the hand on the left that is pulling the woman.
