Inclusion Design

Title: A Day in the Park

Size: 14'' x 8''

Statement:

This piece is meant to show how a community can maintain an inclusive atmosphere. The prompt this piece was built off of was focusing on communities with disability inclusion. In order to show this, I decided to show children playing in a park. I think children sometimes are more accepting and inclusive of everyone than adults, so I chose to represent love and respect through them. I also chose to use a cartoon or children's book style of art to further portray the children aspect.

I used markers for the entire piece. I used smaller, fine point pens/markers for the details on the childrens clothes and larger markers for the rest of it. The work is done on a thick piece of printing paper.

At first, I was going to draw a more analytical piece, but I realized I wanted to do something more joyous. I started with creating the characters I wanted to use in the image – finding what style I'd use to make them. I then sketched out the whole piece and began to fill in the children, tree, and grass. I ended with the yellow sky. I was going to make a light blue sky, but I couldn't find the right color blue in marker, so I used yellow. I think the yellow carry the message of light and inclusion and happiness.
