This work of art was something a unique and different project than I have ever done before. This piece of artwork is a sgraffito clay tile. It is created when a clay tile is formed into a shape, coated in underglaze, and dried. Underglaze is the black coating that is covering the tile. After the underglaze dried, I used a few tools to scratch away at the top layer, revealing the clay underneath. I had previously drawn my design on the clay prior to carving into the surface. After carving the clay, I covered it in a pink glaze that, when fired in a kiln, will turn into clear glass to make the surface of my project look more complete.
I created a unique design based on the scales and eye of a snake. I did make the eye look a bit more like an eye from a fantasy dragon or other. I also made a type of upturned flap that looks like it had previously been covering the under scales of a snake or dragon. I also created a few swirls and other designs to add to my overall design. This design made the work look more complete and a lot more interesting to look at.
I thought that this project was one of my favorite projects so far this year. I loved how there was so much room for creativity in this work of art. I think that this was exciting and fun to do and didn't take to long to carve. I hope that I will be able to do more of this in the future and I can't wait to work on more projects like this.
