Color Design

This work of art is called "Egypt's Hope", as it is a painting of a pyramid with grass growing around it, which indicates that the deserts of Egypt are not as relieving as grass. This project was probably the most interesting one that I have worked on so far. I did not have to draw a certain idea or place. Instead, I drew something that inspired me, such as the pyramids of Egypt. The point of this painting was to show that I can mix colors and use them competently. After drawing my design out on canvas I divided the drawing into 12 main sections. I then split each section into 7 parts. Each section was to be different shades and tints of one of the primary (red, yellow, blue), secondary (violet, orange, green), or tertiary (red-violet, blue-violet, red-orange, yellow-orange, blue-green, yellow-green) colors. There are 3 shades, 3 tints, and 1 of the original color.

I made the different colors by using a 1/1 ratio for the paint. For example, to make orange I would add the same amounts of yellow and red. Yellow-orange, I would add twice as much yellow than red. This is how I managed to make the required colors for the project. After mixing the paint I set to work painting the colors on. Sometimes it would take two or more coats of paint to make the painting look like there were no brushstrokes. The tints, which were made by adding white, seemed to take less coats than the shades, which were made by adding black to the original color. After I painted the entire project I went back and used a special oil based paint Sharpie to outline the colors, giving it a stained-glass look.

This was an interesting and fun project that was made even more interesting with the fact that I had only used paint once or twice before. Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed this project and think that I fully expressed my love for the Egyptian culture in my artwork. I am very pleased with the final product, even if some of the lines could be straighter (I only managed to use a ruler on some of the project). This is one of my favourite works of art so far and I hope that I will be doing more with paint in the future.
