Candy Still Life

The drawings of the spheres and the candy still life are all examples of shading. By shading, a one dimensional drawing can look three dimensional, simply by adding highlights and darkening certain areas of the drawing. The spheres were practice for the candy still life, which uses a lot of shading to make it look 3D. The candy still life has a lot of shading, especially the parts that are overlapping or the clear wrapper on the green candy. These drawings are were both fun ways to try out shading.

To make the spheres I used colored pencil (upper left), charcoal (upper right), watercolor (lower left), and ink (lower right). I made the sphere out of these materials so that I would get a feel for them for when I may need to use them in my drawings in the future. To make the spheres look like they are 3D, I made up a light source in the drawing. In this drawing I made the light source in the upper right side. This makes all of the shadows and the dark areas fall to the opposite side. After doing that I started to shade the balls, using the different materials. After I finished with the spheres, I then started to work on the shadow and the back wall, which provides a background on the balls.

In the candy still life I chose colored pencils as my material. I started out with a HB graphite pencil for the sketching phase and then moved on to colored pencil, once the main part of the drawing was finished. The first thing that I started on was the lemon candy and it's clear wrapper. After that, I started to fill in the chocolate balls, using a brown colored pencil. After finishing the rest of the chocolate balls, I started to work on the green candy in the clear wrapper. It was a bit difficult, but I managed to make it look like the wrapper wrapped around the candy by creating negative space in the areas with the creases. Before I started on the wood I made a handle of a basket near the front. The handle is green and has some scale like qualities. I thought that it would help cover up any white areas and would bring different designs onto the drawing. I finished the chocolate ball wrapper and the wood paneling last. I made sure that some of the wood can be seen through the clear wrappers, to make it seem more like the wrappers were see through.

The one thing that I wish I had, when working on the candy still life, was more time. If I had more time to work on the still life then I would have made the wood paneling a lot more realistic. I would have also added more color to the wood and added more shading to the design. On the spheres I just wish that I was better at using ink. Otherwise, I am perfectly happy with the drawings of my candy still life and my shaded spheres. I expect that there will be a lot more shading in the future and I hope that I will become even more better at drawing realistically.
