Misdirection

This drawing is called "Misdirection", since the drawing seems to be looking everywhere, and is also an example of both cubism art and the styles used by Van Gogh. To make this piece of art I had to pick an art movement or an artist to incorporate into the work of an already picked out artist and art movement. I used Van Gogh as my independently selected artist and had cubism as my other art movement / artist. This was the first time that I had mixed two different styles of art before and found that it was surprisingly fun and unique. This was also the first time that I used pastel instead of ink, graphite, charcoal, or colored pencils.

This drawing was made to be a cubism drawing with a Van Gogh styled background. To make the cubism part of the drawing I found a statue of what I believe was an impala (a small antelope) and viewed it from multiple angles. I then drew the back, left, and right side of the statue to give the drawing a cubistic look. I then proceeded to split up certain parts of the drawing into regions to make the drawing to both look more abstract and to show a difference in shape in the 2D drawing. I did not use any shadows and used only pastel for this art piece. Pastel is like a crayon for an artist which is usually oil based and easier to blend. I used chiefly warm colors for the impala and used cool colors like blue, greens, and purple to make up the background. Even though the impala is a flat drawing, the background had a lot of blending and mixing of different colors. By using a felt cloth, I simply blended the colors for a nice, cool, background.

This was a fun, unique experience for me and was the brightest drawing I have made so far. I loved working with the bright colors, especially the cooler colors. Even though the pastel was difficult for me to use and was messy, it was still a fun material to use and was great for making a beautifully blended background in my drawing. The one thing I wished I could have fixed in my drawing is the not truly symmetrical look to some of the parts of the impala's body. There is also a spot on the right foot where there should ba an orange hoof that I missed. Besides a few smaller problems and the messiness of the pastels, I had no other problems with the making of this artwork.
