Independently Designed

This project is called "The Final Battle" and was a very fun project to work on. I thought that the most fun part of this project was that I was able to use anything to create it and was also able to do the one scene that I always wanted to create; the Final Battle. I started off this project by drawing the outline of my characters on a separate sheet of paper, a place where I would be able to add and take away from the figures before I applied them to the paper (technically I used Bristol board, a finished paper board that is very great for any finished work of art because of the smooth surface and ability to withstand marker or ink). After creating the "main" part of the drawing, my custom designed helmeted figure on the left, I then went on to work on the rest of the drawing (all in graphite). I decided that I wanted him to be pitted up against another knight, one with a more traditional helmet design, a medieval close helm. After creating the two feuding knights, I then inked the entire project, adding in smaller details as I went. I then created the background; a moon with a flag in front of it. I purposely created the flag with two colors; purple and red. The purple moon represented the knight on the left and the red sun represented the knight on the right.

This work of art was rather fun to create because I had the chance to use the materials that I loved the most; ink, and graphite. I started the project by creating the Moon Knight (on the left) and then creating the Sun Knight (on the right). Both were rather plain at the time, without rivets or breathing slits/holes in their armor. After I finished inking the figures, I started to work on the background. At first, I had wanted a tattered banner directly behind them, kind of like the knights were fighting in front of a wall that contained the banners of both the families. But then I decided that I would rather make the battle happen outdoor, on a battlefield. I then came up with the idea to create a moon with a tattered flag in front of it. After sketching and inking both of these figures, I started to work on the details a bit more. I started out by adding the rivets and breathing slits/holes to their armor along with the varying line widths, thicker lines closer to the observer, creating a sense of depth without shading. More touch-ups, such as making the flag look a bit more tattered, were added after the other details. After I was done, I finally added the color; purple, the color of royalty, and red, the color of strength. I used markers for the color because of the smooth look of the finished product. The final bit of color was added to the flag and the rock, along with a slight tint on the fullers of the blade. I decided to go with a more minimalistic approach with the color, attempting to make the more important parts of the drawing stand out more.

This was one of my most favorite projects this year, especially because I was able to draw my favorite subject, the Medieval Age. This project also incorporated a bit more meaning in it, including the two figures fighting and their different colors. I was inspired by Tybalt and Romeo from "Romeo and Juliet" because I was reading the play at the time and I thought that it would be fun to recreate their battle. However, this meaning is more personal as there is no indication of the identity of the two beings. When making this drawing an also had different colors on my mind and how I was going to achieve a nice, smooth design. So I used markers, and I loved how they worked when I designing the characters. I had so much fun making this project and I can't wait to try and make another work like this one.
