Assessment task 1 : For your first Skills Assessment Task 1 you need to render the Spray Nozzle below. You need to select a range of 2 point perspective images from the Google Drive link (at the bottom of this page) to create a 'compilation' sheet (example below) to then digitally marker render. You can choose which images and how you wish to layout on the sheet. We would recommend setting up an A3 sheet (420mm x 297mm) in Procreate at 150DPI.
You can add material textures to the sheet if you wish. You can leave some images as line drawings and marker others (composition). You can create your own linework (more 'sketchy') if you wish. You can add logos or additional details if you wish. You can add backgrounds or linking boxes. You can add text. You can add photographs to give context. You can zoom in on sections, crop or enlarge to show more details. Be creative!
You will be assessed on what you do and how you do it; how the sheet / composition looks; the quality of your marker rendering; the quantity that you produce in the given time: You will have 5 lessons to complete as much as possible. You can also work on this in your own time, study time or prep.
I've selected 3 images from the Google Drive link and marker rendered it on Procreate. The selected images are below :
First, after I inserted the image I wanted to render in my canvas, using the mask tool, I cut the original background of the image so that it would look clean with the background I would choose later.
Before I started rendering, I locked and set the image as reference. Locking the image prevent accidentally ruining the image and setting it as reference let me mask it in any layer. These two tools helped reducing the time to switch layers and fixing those.
I started rendering the image as I did with any other projects so far. I used real marker brush and chosen colour (in this case, grey) to marker render the first layer. Don't forget to mask the rendering area!
Next, I added the second layer of marker rendering with a darker shade (darker grey for this part).
The final step, shadow work, is done with soft clean air brush with black, but sometimes I used the darker shade of a bright colour (e.g. dark brown for yellow) to prevent the shadow looking unreal and separated.
Repeat the step until one image is completed!
Now for the compilation and presentation of the rendered images, I chose this image of garden (or field) I found in Google to use as the background. I chose this because the spray nozzle is often used in a garden, and it would look more interesting if I presented my work in a fun background.
I created yellow drop shadow to make my design pop out from quite colourful background. This will help the viewers to focus on my design not the background.
I added some title also with green drop shadow to make it pop up and some extra art with oil paint brush to enhance my work and also make it interesting and fun.
Finally, I wrote some signs to help the understandings of the viewer, and few images related to spray nozzle like the image of gardener above.
This is the final piece of my first assessment. I decided to do only 3 main images and fill up the spaces with extra resources like background and the title. I wanted my compilation to look like actual advertisement or poster of new design of spray nozzle from a company, so I made it look interesting to catch people's eye. The marker rendering for this piece was the hardest so far due to its complex and detailed shape. This compilation could have been better if I added some more description. Overall, I think this project came out well. I should work on my working speed as it took quite long.
