Matanglawin

ASHS Sandigan Matanglawin advocates for and pursues environmental sustainability within and outside the walls of ASHS. Our purpose is to continuously provide pertinent information on the different environmental issues of the world, raise awareness, and put emphasis on the crucial role of humankind in the protection of our environment. Through our various programs and projects, we strive to make people aware of sustainable alternatives and actions they can do as steps in taking care of the Earth. Ultimately, Matanglawin seeks to inspire and open the eyes of youth leaders to take a stand, defend, protect, and preserve all life in our common home. Like eagles guarding the skies, we aim to protect the life of our only home.

Mission

To respond to the ever-growing issues concerned with the state of the environment and to encourage environmental awareness by starting with the members of the ASHS. This is done by providing them with opportunities to directly participate in projects that contribute to Sandigan Matanglawin’s advocacy. The committee works to form a sense of urgency in the ASHS regarding environmental care by offering platforms for the community to act upon that urgency and initiate positive and sustainable change.

Vision

Sandigan Matanglawin seeks to establish the Ateneo Senior High School (ASHS) as a dynamic and well-informed body of advocates for environmental sustainability. The committee envisions the ASHS community as a group of people who choose to embrace their roles as stewards of creation, act with solidarity to protect the environment, and promote the committee’s values within and beyond the ASHS.

Core Values

Kabutihan (Altruism)

Matanglawin relentlessly seeks to push for active social good in order to promote the sustainable improvement of all of the world’s actors. It establishes itself in selfless concern for all Creation without tarnish of personal interests or glories.

Kalikasan (Environmentalism)

Humanity’s overdependence on material goods and perpetual economic pursuits has created ecologically ineffective consumption-and-production patterns across the globe. As such, the core of Matanglawin’s advocacy is the fight to bring this to light and to push for the sustainable development of all countries with important and urgent emphasis placed on the status of the environment in doing so.

Katapangan (Bravery)

Matanglawin pushes for its causes through thick and thin with optimistic disposition at all times. Whether there be active opposition or a global pandemic, Matanglawin will continue to persevere in advocating for the sustainable development of human societies and living ecosystems everywhere.

Kaisahan (Community)

A sense of oneness is an essential factor towards inculcating a greater sense of environmental responsibility within the community, at all levels of society across the world, beginning with the Ateneo de Manila Senior High School.

Matanglawin (Vigilance)

To be with Matanglawin is to be Matanglawin. Significant change can only be brought about by those able to proactively seek out the irresponsibilities that befell human society. The proclivity to be vigilant about current events, scientific breakthroughs, ecological issues, corporate greed, and international pursuits for the protection of all aspects of the environment is the very cornerstone of Sandigan Matanglawin.

History of Matanglawin

In 2017, Matanglawin was founded under the Sandigan Culture Building Program as an official arm of the Sanggunian in its pursuit for collective sustainability. Since then, it has launched platforms for ecological education for the members of the ASHS with projects such as Aplaya: Coastal Clean-up, Matanglawin Ukay-Ukay, The Ecobrick Drive, Adopt-a-Taklobo, The Habitat Newsletter, and the Alimbukad: Webinar Series. At present, Matanglawin carries on in being centered around its original idea of vigilance, or being Matanglawin, for the careful preservation of our common home. Matanglawin strives to continue being a constant presence among the ASHS’ student body as a proactive force for advocating environmental consciousness and stewardship through various new projects.
