Kanlaon is the student committee that advocates for disaster preparedness and risk reduction. We aim to cultivate disaster resiliency within the ASHS by propagating critical information about hazards and disasters, generating emergency plans for various school events, and responding to calls for action in calamity-inflicted areas.
Kanlaon aims to cultivate a culture of preparedness and resiliency by propagating critical information about hazards and disasters, organizing community emergency drills, generating emergency plans for various school events, and responding to calls for action to calamity-inflicted areas. All these action steps are done through observing scientific and socio-cultural approaches to understanding disaster, implementing effective programs on disaster risk reduction, and collaborating with the school administration and other organizations to further the committee’s vision.
By drawing attention to the subject of disaster risk and reduction in such a highly exposed and vulnerable country like the Philippines, Kanlaon aims to create an environment that preserves the value of being persons-for-others, battles the common stigma of apathy, and fosters awareness and responsibility.
Kanlaon is the disaster resiliency student committee in the Ateneo de Manila Senior High School that envisions a disaster-resilient senior high community with each community member knowledgeable of the nature of hazards and of the proper response to different disaster scenarios. In the process, Kanlaon sees its commitment to duty as a step in building a disaster-resilient nation by equipping community members with the necessary tools to make their community outside the University disaster-resilient.
Kanlaon gives importance to the Atenean value of cura personalis, instilling in all sectors a sense of urgency, conscientiousness, and accountability when dealing with disasters. Empowering the community to be a person of the 5Cs, Kanlaon envisions to develop a safe community that is joined together towards a common goal: to become a disaster-ready and resilient community.
The Latin translation for “care for the person”, as Kanlaon envisions a community that cares for one another and empowers their sense of prudence and responsibility in the face of a disaster.
No discrimination on the basis of race, religion, class, gender, and other protected categories shall take place in or out of the committee. Fairness is present in any operations of Kanlaon.
Kanlaon is dedicated to achieving its goal of a disaster-resilient Senior High community.
Organization and practices that shape the ASHS to be fully equipped and knowledgeable about emergency protocols and procedures that the country and our institution instill to its body for safety and security measures before, during, and after a calamity.
Kanlaon is committed to exercising professionalism and integrity in providing fair and objective services.
On November 25-26, 2016, a group of six Ateneans was sent to be the representatives of the Philippines in the first High School Students Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day in Kuroshio, Japan, where workshops and talks were held regarding the effective ways of handling disasters, particularly earthquakes and tsunamis. After the trip, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) asked the student-leaders to do a program for their respective schools. Ateneo’s response was to create a DRRR Committee.
Before the school year 2017-2018 started, proposals and preparations were made to officially organize the said committee. By June of that year, it was decided by the OSA and Sanggu to create Sandigan, a culture-building program which includes Kanlaon and three other committees.
