Fight For Ukraine

Maddy Ehrlich

More than 2 million people have fled Ukraine. We all watch the news and hear the horrific tales. We watch, but we can also act. Here at Niskayuna High School, we have the opportunity to make a difference and help the people of Ukraine while their home is being ripped from them.

The Warrior is holding its own donation drive for Ukraine. If you happened to see that big box at crossroads staring you down, now you know that it's not just taking up space, but there to ask for help. We are asking for donations of medical supplies like bandages, first aid kits, flashlights, duct tape, personal hygiene equipment like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. All of the products will be donated to the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) to help Ukraine and the refugees. You can donate from April 4th - April 14th. Don’t wait, donate and help.

Animal Welfare Club had a bake sale March 29th and 30th to raise money to help animals in Ukraine. They are still collecting donations for the Humane Society International, an organization that's helping care for individual pets, supporting clinics, and rescue organizations in Ukraine. It also helps animal groups in neighboring countries struggling to handle the influx in refugees. You can go to Mrs. Halusics room in B234 to donate money. Any amount, no matter how small, will help their cause. Let's see how much money we can raise as a school! By working to help all those animals in Ukraine, we can help the people who care for them too.

The Muslim Society Association also had bake sales on March 23rd, 24th and 25th, all proceeds donated to Ukraine refugees. With a variety of cupcakes, cookies and others delicious foods, the Muslim Society Association is doing their part in assiting refugees in Ukraine.

In the upper C-hall where there is normally a big window that's overlooking the side of the school, instead you will see the Ukraine flag. It stands tall at the end of the hallway and shows the support we have for Ukraine. Students can take a photo with the flag to share it with friends or on social media. Show the world what Niskayuna High School is doing and the support we are showing. Who knows, it could make a person see the picture and smile.

In addition, Regan Anderson and Megan Breslin are in the process of trying to organize a sticky note fundraiser for Ukraine regarding the flag, where people could post sticky notes on the flag. All proceeds would go to UNICEF.

In the hallways on bulletin boards and other places some teachers are hanging up Ukraine flags. For example, in the science hallway the background of one of the displays is the flag. Teachers can and are hanging up Ukrainian flags on their doors or windows.

Many history classes have been discussing the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, both the long history that led up to this war and the current details. As many people know, the U.S can't send its own troops in fear of WWIII, instead levying sanctions against Russia. Despite the restrictions, Americans are still finding new ways to contribute. How can we help? Clubs can continue having fundraisers and Niskayuna families can donate money and supplies.

Different clubs have set aside time to discuss the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Political and Current Events Club (PACE) has had multiple meetings that have talked about Ukraine. With the war spreading, so has talk about what’s going on.

At different Universities in the U.S. people are showing their support for Ukraine by cutting off partnerships with Russian organizations and having rallies. Schools across America are trying to help. Nisky students are joining the fight, doing what we can to help people in Ukraine. Rather than ignoring the war, join in the fight. As a school, we are capable of doing some good.

Students and teachers,

I believe that we have the opportunity to help Ukraine, we can rise to the occasion and help many or we can watch it all play out and ignore the harm. Remember that we are living through history and Niskayuna High School can make a difference, every person matters and with a school full of people, we have the ability to help Ukraine in their time of need.
