P.S. 203 The Floyd Bennett School

Leveraging School Staff & Parents

Shared by Dina Soliman, ENL Coordinator of P.S. 203 The Floyd Bennett School

P.S.203, The Floyd Bennett School, celebrates all of our students’ cultures and the many languages that they speak. Our school vision is to "foster the development of each student's positive self-esteem and create a love of learning in an atmosphere of collaboration among supportive educational staff, parents, and the surrounding community." School staff members are well aware of the diversity in our community and we do everything we can to accommodate the members of our community such as students, parents, visitors and many more to make them feel welcome.

Registration for new admits is very important and can be a lengthy process. In order to adequately assist parents and guardians to register incoming students, we have prepared all registration documents to be readily accessible in the many different languages our school serves such as Arabic, Bengali, French, Haitian Creole, Spanish and Urdu. All of the documents are also color coded for the different languages.

This process makes the parents and guardians feel welcome to the school and that school staff members are more than prepared to accommodate their language necessities. School staff members are aware that there are designated personnel to assist in language interpretations and can call the main office to ask for assistance when they are in need of an interpreter. If any documents need to be translated, the ELL coordinator reaches out to the translation unit to have the forms submitted for translation and available for school staff members. The parents handbook is translated to the different languages members of our community speak and can be found right next to the main office on the bulletin board. P.S.203 is always looking for new and innovative ways to carry out any language needs that the staff, parents, visitors, or community members may need.
