What is hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol)?
This is a medical condition the leads to an abnormally high level of fat build-up in the bloodstream.
Why is this bad?
The high amounts of fat content can block the blood from getting to the rest of the body and lead to a heart attack or a stroke.
"Good" cholesterol vs. "bad" cholesterol
It is important to know that there are two different kinds of cholesterol, HDL and LDL. HDL is considered "good" cholesterol as it helps carry the fat away from the bloodstream. LDL is considered "bad" cholesterol and increases the fat content of the bloodstream.
What is a Hyperlipidemic diet?
It is low in saturated and transfats. (Trans fats are common in fried and processed foods)
This diet includes lots of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, beans, nuts, whole grains, and fish regularly into your diet. Foods with "good" cholesterol include olive oil, eggs, canola oil, peanut oil, peanuts, peanut butter, cashews, olives, and avocados.
