Pasta with Homemade Sauce

1/4 cup chopped onions
15 oz no salt added tomato sauce (canned) or crushed tomatoes
8 tablespoons of no salt added tomato paste (Hunt’s)
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
3 tsp garlic, diced or minced
1 1/2 tsp ground oregano
2 tbsps basil (dried)
1/8 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1 tsp fennel
1 1/2 cups of water or low-sodium broth, or red wine
1 lb. whole wheat pasta
Variations: Add 1 lb of a lean ground meat (90/10) to increase protein. Add a no-sodium seasoning blend to add flavor.

Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray. Set to medium-low heat.
Cook the onions until they’re translucent (if adding ground meat, add it here and brown) and add the tomato sauce and tomato paste; then water. Stir in all the spices, and let the sauce simmer on low for 30 minutes.
