This course is designed to ignite your curiosity and deepen your understanding of the world around you. Throughout the year, we will explore a variety of scientific topics, including the principles of the scientific method, the properties of matter, the forces that shape our planet, the basics of life science, and so much more!
You will engage in hands-on experiments, interactive lessons, and collaborative projects that encourage you to think like a scientist. Together, we will investigate everything from the smallest atoms to the vastness of space, and discover how science impacts our daily lives. Get ready to ask questions, make discoveries, and develop the skills you need to understand and appreciate the world around us.
The curriculum for this course aligns with the West Virginia College and Career Readiness Standards for Science, developed by the West Virginia Department of Education. We will primarily be using McGraw Hill’s Inspire Science as our reference material, however we will utilize multiple mediums to ensure all students have a solid understanding of each course topic.
Current Unit Overview: In science class, students are currently exploring the ever-changing nature of Earth. We are learning about plate tectonics and how the movement of Earth’s plates causes events like earthquakes, volcanoes, and the formation of mountains. Students are discovering how these powerful forces shape the surface of our planet over time.
We are also studying the formation of landforms, including mountains, valleys, and ocean basins, and how processes like weathering, erosion, and deposition continually reshape Earth’s surface. In addition, students are investigating fossils to better understand how life and environments have changed throughout Earth’s history.
Our unit also includes the rock cycle, where students learn how rocks are constantly being formed, broken down, and transformed between igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic types. Through hands-on activities and interactive lessons, students are building a deeper understanding of how dynamic and interconnected Earth’s systems truly are.
