Brother Edwin Charles Reggio, C.S.C. (1923-2013)
Yaponcha, Hopi Wind God
found form of heart pine
2003
Brother Edwin earned his BA from St. Edward’s University in 1958. His influence on St. Edward’s was deep and wide; Brother Edwin taught as well as serving as Auxiliary Services Coordinator, Event Coordinator, band conductor, rector of Andre Hall and Dean of Students for the University! A wood carver since age 9, Brother Edwin sought to “release the image captured in found wood – revealing Christ, saints, and a wide variety of subjects, especially cats.”
While some of Brother Edwin’s work takes a traditional approach to wood-carving by imposing an image on wood, he was often inspired by found wood later in life. “A lot of the work has been done by nature,” Brother Edwin quipped. In “Yaponcha, Hopi Wind God” we see his skill in unveiling figures while retaining the natural form of found wood.
