Brother Sylvester Andrew Krus, C.S.C. (1927-2009)
Congregation of Holy Cross Banner
mixed media
date unknown
Brother Sylvester earned his BA at St. Edward’s University in 1959, and later served on the staff of St. Joseph’s Hall and the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence. Upon retirement Brother Sylvester sought to dedicate himself full-time to art, establishing a stained glass studio. Brother Donald Blauvelt, C.S.C. remarked that, “Throughout his life, Brother Sylvester was torn between a monastic life and an active life. He liked periods of solitude, but loved people too much to dedicate his life completely to a monastery.” One may find that balance in a project such as this banner, with diligent hours of quiet work resulting in an artwork intended for Brother residences and community gatherings.
