L/O: Explore and Understand what jubilee is and how it links to Jesus
To proclaim the acceptable year of our Lord is also read: to proclaim a year of jubilee!!! or even the year of the Lord's favour!!
Jesus started his calling (serve his people) after his baptism and the first thing he preached was in a Jewish place of Worship . He took the scroll and read a passage from the Jewish Bible about the jubilee then declared:, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing,”
How many promises did He read from the book of the prophet
Name two promises that Jesus claim to have been fulfilled?
Jesus is reading from the Old Testament and the Old testament talks bout Jubilee years in many of its passages. The idea of the Jubilee is first found in Leviticus, which is he third book of the old testament ( Jewish Bible). God gave the Israelites the law that they should follow ..it describes Jubilee legislation. At the time there were complicated laws and, in some circumstances slavery was allowed. However in the slides God instructs the Jewish people that there should be one year every fifty years that will set everything right. during this year, issues around who owns a property would be settled, debts owed would be wiped out and enslaved people would be free: it would be a year of justice and equality.
Who are the marginalised in the time of Jesus?
Who are the marginalised today? How do you think Catholics help? how can you help?
In the first video Jesus reads a passage from Isaiah, By doing this he joins the original Old testament idea of Jubilee with a new testament understanding of Jubilee. 'The year of the Lord's favour' is the same therefore means a year that allows people to return to their homes, for enslaved people to be freed and for debts to be cancelled however Jesus then develops the meaning of jubilee further by reading the words of Isaiah (who makes a prophecy about the messiah to come)
The text mention poor and oppressed, blind and captives. In Jesus' time, these groups of people were often marginalised. The prophecy say that this will no longer be true...Jesus adds today the prophecy has been fulfilled. He is making clear that he has been anointed or sent by God to change what is wrong in society.
