1.12:Protecting Creation

What can we do to protect creation?

Even though humans have caused destruction to the environment, they can do many things to care for it and to reduce the effect of the harm done in the past. ~Once people realise that they have damaged the world, they can take responsibility to change the things they can. Many people, from all over the world, beleive it is important to care for the environment for different reasons. Catholics are particularly motivated since it is part of their duty as stewards of creation and a key part of Catholic social teaching. One major goal in this effort to care for the world is sustainable development.

In September 2015 the United Nations' set out "a supremely ambitious and transformational vision" — a plan of action for "people, planet, and prosperity" over the next 15 years.

Sustainable development has been defined as ‘meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ and some of the headline statistics related to the 17 SDGs show that clearly we still have a long way to go. CAFOD

CAFOD (the Catholic Agency for Overseas development) Works on many projects that support these goals. In southern Bangladesh CAFOD is working with the Bangladesh Association for sustainable Development (BASD) to establish 24 'eco-villages' _ where all villagers commit to sustainable farming. The villages are threatened by cyclones, rising sea levels and salty soil, making it hard to grow food. BASD are training villagers in eco-friendly methods of farming, like making organic pesticides and fertilisers, planting protective tree barriers
