In the first two chapters of Genesis we read that everything God made was good and that God was pleased with it. Humans were created in God's image, to look after the created world. However, in Genesis 3 we will read about the goodness in God's creation being challenged by Humans, who were put in position of responsibility. They committed the first sin (original sin) by disobeying God's commands. As a result, the goodness is spoiled and humans feel ashamed and embarrassed by their actions. The story in Genesis 3 is known as the Fall.
L/O: Explore the Story of the Fall
Keywords: Original Sin, The fall, temptation
How is the story in the youtube clip different from the one you read?
What is the most important difference do you think? why do you think it is so important
Choose one of the character : Adam, Eve or the Snake
Rewrite the story from their perspective try and use all the keywords and make the story realistic yet interesting ( with a twist in the plot)
Sin: An offense against what is logic, truthful, and helpful, it is a failure in genuine love for God and neighbour
Temptation: an attraction, either from outside oneself or from within, to act contrary to right reason and the commandments of God (CCC 538).
God is presented as Immanent (the quality of being close to humans and acting in the world) as he walks through the garden, and responds to the man and woman in three ways:
He questions Adam and Eve about how they know they are naked
He respond to their sin by giving them a punishment
He dresses them in animal skins to cover their nakedness
Let us reflect: Why ask questions to Adam an Eve if God knows everything?
God's punishment is specific to each character in the story. All three are sent out of the garden of Eden, which was paradise, and into the wider world, which would contain greater struggle.
The serpent is cursed and placed in the lowliest position-crawling on the dust on the ground. There will be hostility between humans and the serpent.
The Harmony between Eve and Adam is destroyed by their sin, meaning that their relationship will have difficulties and so even joyful experiences such as having a child will be painful
Adam the Man: the harmony between humans and God's creation is destroyed and so Adam will have to work hard on the land to get the food that he needs and when his physical life ends he will return to dust
Reflect:
After reading the whole story of the fall, there are many lessons that can be learnt. Can you describe three lessons you have learnt? which of these is the most important? How will you apply that to your own life?
