Technical Department
S5/S6 Only
Ready to get hands-on with metal and create some seriously cool projects? The National 5 Practical Metalwork course is your chance to dive into the world of metalwork. You’ll learn how to use a range of tools, machines, and techniques to manufacture a range of different metal projects. From welding to machining, you’ll get real workshop experience, working with modern materials while learning the skills that are in high demand. Whether you're into engineering or just love making things, this course is perfect for anyone who wants to turn raw metal into something awesome!
Mostly based in a workshop, you'll spend time working with tools and materials, but there’s also a written part where you'll cover the theory, safety, and techniques behind it all.
The course is split into three main areas:
Bench skills
You’ll develop skills, knowledge and understanding in using metalworking hand tools, bench-fitting work, routine sheet-metal work, measuring and marking out, involving complex features.
You will also develop the ability to read and use drawings and diagrams depicting familiar and unfamiliar metalwork tasks.
Machine processes
You'll develop skills, knowledge and understanding in the use of metalworking machines, equipment, related processes, materials, measuring and marking out, involving complex features.
Fabrication and thermal joining
Here is where you will learn how to Weld and develop skills in other thermal joining techniques and in measuring and marking out.
You will also develop skills, knowledge and understanding in the fabrication, forming and joining of metalwork components with some complex features.
Assessment
The craftwork has to be manufactured with a high level of independence to be awarded a good grade for this component.
This course is suitable for learners with an interest in practical technologies. It is largely learner-centred. Candidates must have good numeracy skills, patience and attention to detail.
This course is for those wanting to progress to a related career or for pupils interested in practical subjects.
This course is for S5/S6 pupils only. Pupils who previously achieved a National 5 in Practical Woodwork are desirable.
The course is hands-on and exploratory, building your skills, knowledge, and understanding of:
Metalworking techniques
Measuring and marking out metal sections and sheet materials
Safe working practices in workshop environments
Practical creativity and problem-solving skills
Sustainability issues in a practical metalworking context
You’ll create products like metal frames, structures, and machined components, gaining real experience with the tools and processes used in the industry.
