Art Department
The Course encourages learners to express personal ideas through photography, developing both technical and creative skills. It fosters an appreciation of photography while enhancing problem-solving, critical thinking, and reflective practice.
Assessment
To earn a Higher award, pupils must complete a themed portfolio with analysis and evaluation, and sit a written exam on creative and technical photography. The course is graded A-D, with marks allocated as follows:
Personal Project: 100 marks
Question Paper: 30 marks
Prior learning is not mandatory, but it is recommended that learners have studied Art and Design and English at National 5 or Higher to effectively analyse and evaluate their work and that of photographers.
The personal project consists of 8 photoshoots which can be based on still life or documentary photography. This may require photoshoots to be done in the Pupils personal time.
Interest in photography and ability to complete a themed portfolio with written analysis

Recommended (but not essential) prior study of Art and Design and English at National 5 or Higher
