Business Department
The purpose of the course is to highlight ways in which organisations operate and the steps they take to achieve their goals. The course combines practical, theoretical aspects of business learning through the use of real-life contexts. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained are embedded in current business practice and reflect the integrated nature of organisations, their function and their decision-making process. It includes the study of organisations in private, public and voluntary sectors.
Assessment
National 3
At National 3, all units are internally assessed. Learners must pass all of the required units.
National 4
At National 4, learners must pass all of the required units which, are marked internally. In addition, learners must complete the Added Value Unit.
For the Added Value Unit, the learner will carry out research on a theme drawn from the course and present their findings. The assignment will assess learners’ skills in gathering, choosing, evaluating and presenting appropriate information in the form of a plan that will assist the development of a new small business.
National 5
The course assessment consists of two components: a question paper (75%) and an assignment (25%). Both are externally marked.
The assignment allows learners to demonstrate planning, research, interpretation and evaluation skills in the context of a business topic. This will involve preparing a short business report e.g. The HR Function’s recruitment and selection policies
The Question paper is an external exam in which learners will be required to demonstrate depth and extension of skills, knowledge and understanding developed from across the course.
Higher
The course assessment consists of two components: a question paper (75%) and an assignment (25%). Both are externally marked.
The assignment gives learners an opportunity to demonstrate planning, research, and analytical skills in the context of a business topic. This will involve preparing a business report e.g. How successful is a specific Business’s marketing campaign.
The Question paper is an external exam in which learners will be required to demonstrate depth and extension of skills, knowledge and understanding developed from across the course.
Section One consists of a “Case Study” worth 30 marks. The questions will be drawn from any aspect of the Course and will require learners to demonstrate the application of skills, knowledge and understanding within the context of the case study.
Section Two is worth 60 marks and will be drawn from any aspect of the Course.

The course develops enterprising and employability skills whilst exploring the impact businesses have on everyday life. It develops skills for learning, life and work that will be of instant use in the workplace.
