Her studies began at Comenius University (Faculty of Natural Sciences – Department of physical geography, cartography and geoecology) in Bratislava, 1975-1980. In 1981-1984 she was full-time doctoral student and her PhD. thesis: “Contribution to the numerical taxonomy application methods for soil classification aims” was defended in the Geographical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. In 1996 she became a senior researcher (II.a), in 2008 she was appointed as associated professor in the Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra (Landscape engineering, environmental issues, soil science, urban soils research).

She is director of the Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute Bratislava, Slovakia. She has responsibility for leadership of the institute, coordination of national and international projects. Prior to her current role, she headed the Department of soil science and soil mapping (1988-1990, 2002-2012). She has been lecture at universities in Slovakia and Czech Republic. She is member of the Editorial Board of some journals, and several Scientific Boards.

Dr. Sobocká gained expertise in soil science, soil survey, classification and mapping, WRB classification (translator of the WRB into Slovak language) and GIS application. In addition, she is a specialist in anthropogenic and urban soils research, soil functions and ecosystem services, climate change and other global impact on soil resources. She worked as expert on soil sealing (DGENVI EC) and on less favourable areas (LFA) in the Programme of Rural Development (DGAGRI EC). She was also elected president of the Slovak Soil Science Society.

Assoc. Prof. Jaroslava Sobocká works as one of 27 top soil scientists nominated by FAO national representative over the world in the GSP Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils (ITPS) in 2013-2015. She has been mandated by several tasks involved by GSP´s agenda but her key activities are in the European (regional) Soil Partnership as a member of the Executive committee and chair of the Pillar 1 of the ESP – Sustainable management of soil resources in Europe.
