ASSESSMENTS and EXAMS
At this moment in time (Week 4 of Term 1) we are awaiting the MOEs instructions on all TVET IAs and their weightings, plus other details. The Department, however, has decided in their first Dept. Meeting (Mon, Week 3) that we should go ahead and conduct our IAs - in the form of Tests, Activities, Quizzes, etc. What has been decided is as follows:
The first quarter of the Term - Test 1 15%
Second quarter: Mid-Term Assessment 30%
Third quarter of the Term - Test 2 15%
Fourth quarter (End of Term Exam) 40%
This will be our format until MOE advises us to follow a new prescribed format.
Year 10
This year we have a record-breaking number of F4 or Year 10 students: 120 divided into three streams - F4A, F4B and F4C - about 40 students in each class. The school has only 3 classrooms allocated for Year 10s. Wouldn't the teaching and learning process be more effective if, say, there are only 25-30 pupils, or if there were more classrooms? Yes, we will try and cope, but there is concern about who will pay the "cost"?
This year's TVET program will focus solely on the 3 compulsory subjects: ICT, Business Studies, and Economics, for the Year 10 students - with Business Studies to be completed by end of Term 1, then Economics ((T2), and lastly ICT (T3).
Business Studies IA Field Trip: IA 1:TASK 1 - 20%
This IA is based on "Types of Businesses", and as part of the students Tasks they are required to visit, at least two, business and learn the nature and status of the businesses. The Field work is conducted on Kiritimati island and after gathering info the students have a sound background on the various types of businesses that exist on the island. With information gathered from the Ministry of Commerce, Linnix, the students have determined that there are 377 registered businesses on the island. They also found out that there are 42 various natures of businesses, such as 'nimoko' bakery, rentals, to the larger scale of hardware and retail and wholesale shops.
From their investigation the students found out that the majority of business entities are run by sole traders, with some companies owned by families, and a very few establishments run by partnerships.
Using the guidelines (Tasks) prepared by CDR they then proceeded to prepare their findings in the form of a Presentation. The Year 10 students were grouped into fours and each group had to make their own presentation. However, some groups had 5 or 6 members in them.
We applaud the students and their ways of presenting their findings, and we did not hesitate to award them with marks ranging from 16%-20%. Resuts will be submitted to EU MOE at the specified due dates.
Year 11
Since our Year 11 students this year have completed the compulsory subjects, they are now doing the electives of their choice this Term. There are 3 electives that we are providing the students this firstTerm: Woodwork, Food & Nutrition, and Accounting.
