Satellite:

Satellites communicate by using radio waves to send signals to the antennas on the Earth. The antennas then capture those signals and process the information coming from those signals. About 1,100 active satellites, both government and private, are presently orbiting the earth.

What Were the First Satellites in Space?

The Soviet Union was the first to launch a satellite into space. The satellite was launched in 1957 and was called Sputnik 1. NASA has launched many satellites into space. The first was Explorer 1 in 1958. Explorer was America's first man-made satellite. The first satellite picture of Earth came from NASA's Explorer 6 in 1959.

What Are the important Parts of a Satellite?

Satellites come in many shapes and sizes. But most have at least two parts in common - an antenna and a power source.

The antenna is used to send and receive information.

The power source can be a solar panel or battery. Solar panels make power by turning sunlight into electricity.

Important functions of a satellite

Many satellites carry cameras and scientific sensors. They may gather information about Earth's land, air and water. Or they may collect data from the solar system and universe.

They keep track of storms and hurricanes, tornadoes. They can detect other natural disasters such as fires, flooding, avalanches, tsunamis, and volcano eruptions.

They can be used to assist in locating people, vehicles and other important items such as natural resources.

They are also used by police to track criminals and their activities. They can also identify speeding vehicles and locate road accidents.

They are also used by students who want to locate towns, cities, rivers, oceans, mountains, islands and, or, continents
