Ruby-tailed Wasps

Photos by Mark Beaumont

Ruby-tailed Wasps are very small (only about 10mm long) and are one of the many species that don't annoy you during picnics! They are kleptoparasites - they lay their eggs in the nests of other solitary bee and wasp species and when they hatch, their young consume the eggs or larva of the host bee or wasp for sustenance. Nice!!!
