Home Reading

We begin our nightly Home Reading program in late September.

Thank you for reading with your child. There are so many benefits to daily reading with your child! If you have special events happening at your home and you do not have time to read one night, please keep these books for a few more days. It is important that this reading time is to be a pleasurable experience for your family in order to instill a love of books/reading.

Please note that the books in the ZipLoc bags are most likely new to the children…we have not practiced these in class. If the books are too hard, please feel free to read it together by taking turns reading pages with your child or by taking turns reading and repeating the page! Just have fun, keep it positive and read, read, read! J

Students will be independently selecting and borrowing classroom books from levelled bins that we have matched them with as a starting point. They will be reminded and given the opportunity to change their books each morning at the beginning of the day as part of our classroom routine. We check in and conference with students each week and will move them to the next bin as they progress. Please know that the level of the book is only an assessment tool for the teacher, and allows students some independence in book selection…all students are progressing at their own pace. That’s why in class, we refer to books we can read independently as our “just right’ books.
