Dear Div. 9 Families,
It was great to hear back from all of you over the past week. We miss seeing your smiling faces at Ruth King! Over the past week, teachers have been busy learning about new platforms and establishing processes/researching ways to communicate virtually with families, as well as planning in grade groups to set up and establish how this will work to support students’ learning. Thank you again for your patience as this is an all new experience for all involved and is very different from seeing our students face to face. We miss all of you but understand that safety comes first in order to maintain and ensure all remain healthy.
As a follow up to Sooke School District Superintendent Scott Stinson’s email, schools are working towards online continuity of learning opportunities being fully implemented by mid April (Tuesday, April 15th). To that end, I would like to share with you what the plans are for our classroom learning community. The Ministry of Education and SD62 has decided that schools should be assigning approximately one hour’s worth of activities per day. Please know that we understand each family’s situation is unique and have tried to plan accordingly. As always, we welcome constructive feedback as this is an entirely new format for all of us!
**While we continue to find ways to connect with our students remotely, we ask families to respect the privacy of our teachers and the integrity of their work by not recording conversations or lessons, unless they have the permission of the staff member.
Beginning next week, please look for the following:
● A weekly schedule of learning activities. This will be emailed home on Monday morning each week. A daily activity will be assigned focusing on literacy and numeracy, with other subject area extensions and links for those who would like to do more. We have decided to keep most activities non screen based (for a variety of reasons), with links and other resources to provide plenty of choice.
● A daily recorded read-aloud with an option to do a written reading response. Because family’s technology availability varies throughout the day we thought this was a good option to provide flexibility in terms of when you choose to have your child listen/watch the recording. We are excited to have readings by each grade 1 teacher and our teacher-librarian Mr. Dranchuk!
● An online reading program that will be monitored and assessed by the teacher. We have chosen to use Simbi. Please do not sign up yet…more information regarding permissions and how to access this program will follow shortly.
● A Thursday check in. Please email in a photo or word doc/PDF attachment of one of the literacy(either from the weekly schedule or one of the reading responses) or numeracy activities that your child has completed so that we can keep in touch and offer feedback and/or support.
● A website of PE and Music links and activities provided by Ms. McLaren and Ms. Devries (see below)
● Please continue to monitor our class blog (here!)
Picking up student belongings: As of right now we are awaiting further information around access to personal items for students and processes are being developed. The exception to this is for medical supplies/equipment. Please contact Ms. Ives if you need to pick up these items (such as an epi-pen/medication/puffer/glasses/retainer etc). For those of you who have indicated that supplies are an issue, we have informed the Principal and will let you know of any plans made by the school about supplies as soon as we find out. At this time, printed packages will not be available for pick up by families.
Please check your email regularly in order to stay connected. This is the best way to stay in touch if you have any questions or concerns along the way.
Thank you,
G. Walker and R. Radsma J
