Backfire

Concerning The AIS As A Cure For Backfire - It Is Not The Answer!

When fitting less restrictive pipes (slip-ons or full systems), it is commonly reported that the AIS can possibly contribute to excessive backfire on deceleration. There may be other causes of the popping on deceleration especially once you have added freer flowing exhaust - the idle may need to be raised, the carbs synched, and the PMS properly adjusted. So before you do the AIS plug or removal because somebody told you it would stop your backfire, make sure you have the bike well tuned, and then decide. Generally speaking, a simple PMS adjustment of 1/4 to 1 a full turn out (as needed) on each carb will eliminate the issue without AIS removal.

The best course of action is to adjust the PMS first.......then worry about the AIS. You can normally eliminate backfire without removing the AIS.

Also check to make sure there are no exhaust leaks at the head and where the mufflers/taill pipe attach.
