This was an interesting introductory week for me as I am only now becoming aware of the pedestrian mobility problems in Venice. The difficulties are much greater than I at first imagined as pedestrian density, much of it coming from excessive tourist flow, drives average commutes for Venetians to more than thirty minutes a day.
I have begun background research by reading past IQP presentations and seeing how they chose to tackle the problem. The immense use of manual counting in order to collect data seems strikes me as being remarkably ineffective because it cannot function year round and takes large time commitments on the part of the counters. I look forward to exploring potential solutions to the problems with manual counting throughout my project.

I also learned that this painting by Monet, which I have hanging in my room, is of Venice. I can't wait to see the real place.
