An important piece of Venetian infrastructure that we found we had been overlooking is the temporary pathways that the city erects when the streets flood. Especially when considering pedestrian flow, these pathways are critical because they limit the amount of space through which people are able to move. Many plazas and larger streets are reduced to two 'lanes' of two person wide traffic, unless you are braze enough and have tall enough boots to brave the waters on your own. After doing some research I found that this happens more than the city would like, but fortunately, it typicallly stays away from their main tourist events, which makes it so it avoids the time periods of highest pedestrian traffic.
