First Week in Venice

Our first week in Venice has been an incredible learning experience, firming up a lot of the background research we had been doing about the city. We have been able to see the street mobility issues in person even with it being outside of peak tourism time. We can only imagine what it is like during those times of the year.

We have been able to have meetings with both Piero Toffolo and Tomaso Minelli. They have been able to clear up a lot of our initial questions and concerns about available data from past projects. Piero was able to walk us through the QGIS program and give us the most up to date files that we will be working with throughout the project. Tomaso was able to provide a basis for the proper formatting of any data that we will be collecting throughout the term.

Working with Professor Carrera and Professor Higgins, we have continued to edit and expand on our project report and presentation. They have also assisted us in finding places to place our 10 cameras loaned to us by Placemeter, a company out of New York that we officially partnered with in order to test out the option of automated counting for the coming years projects. We are working this week to try to put out as many as possible and will begin manual counts next week, some independently and some in collaboration with other project teams.

We are enjoying the opportunity to familiarize ourselves with the city and are confident in where we currently are in our project. There is a lot of work left to do, and we are ready to see what the next weeks bring! We've attached a picture of some of the crowding we have been able to observe ourselves.
