When contributing to the introduction of our paper, I had the task to write about the general problem we are facing on a global scale. Our mission is to preserve the bells and bell towers of Venice, but it is important to grasp the reasons why this problem even came about. As I was researching I was able to find key sources that provided me with history about the usage of bells and how the development of culture played a critical role in the need for them. Bells were apart of the everyday life, as the chimes represented a call to meetings, the time of the day, and even in some cases, emergencies. More importantly, were their contributions to religion. Although religion isn’t as prominent today as it once was it was still shocking to learn that “only 15% of worshippers attend Mass every Sunday,” especially in a country that is known for its religious customs. Additionally, today’s society depends greatly upon technology, such as cellular phones, and they have slowly taken over the bells’ original purpose. Through this research I have learned that it is imperative that the historical bells and bell towers are preserved for future generations to come.
