More modern bell forging takes place using casting molds as seen below and a high copper bronze alloy. The alloy is poured into the mold and pressed until solid. All inscriptions and artwork found on the bells are usually created in the mold and not done directly on the bell. Functional bells, or bells made to be used, are made out of bronze because it is soft enough to be shaped as desired but also firm enough to prevent the bell from deforming significantly with use.
Bells were traditionally cast for the use in churches, clocks, bell towers and other buildings. Prior to the use of large scale foundries the process of making a bell was a momentous occasion and required the entire community to collaborate. Bells were forged on site, in holes dug next to the structure being erected. People felt pride for their town bell as it was seen as a symbol of who they were.
