When the group split up our background sections, I had the task to write the adaptive reuse portion. This section is important in understand our project because once all the data has been collected for bells and bell towers, the next steps are to find everyday uses for the towers so there is a greater willingness to preserve them.
While conducting my research I came across a key paper titled, “Houses of God... or not?! Approaches to the Adaptive Reuse of Churches in Germany and the United States.” Within this source I was able to understand possible remodels of churches, approximate costs, and labor intensity. Although there was not much information about bell towers, it provided us with an in depth analysis of the basis of adaptive reuse. It also made us aware of possible preservation laws and guidelines from the countries of Germany and the United States, which is very important to consider while we complete our project.
