Today we went up to the San Geremia Bell Tower, which was a blast!
From the dozens of pictures taken of the belfry, I tried to reconstruct a model of the area:
This was the best quality I could create. When I tried to increase the Depth Cloud quality past medium, I ran into problems later meshing the points together. So in order to increase the quality, a computer with a lot more RAM is needed.
Some things that could have been done better:
I should have covered the bells more
I needed to take one more layer at an angle
Walks underneath of the bells looking up could have been done to capture more of the belfry
Things that made the task difficult:
The very large metal A frames in the belfry really hamper photoscan. It does not work well on edges, and the fact that the bars show up very close to the camera in some shots probably does not help.
Processing time - it took several hours to generate the final product of this belfry from my laptop. If we were back in Worcester, I'd be able to put some higher-powered desktops to work.
Hopefully we can learn from the difficulties of this belfry and improve our results from our next visit.
