Troop 266 Leadership Information

Serving and contributing actively in a Troop position is a great learning and development opportunity. Actively serving in a position also helps fulfill one of the major requirements for higher ranks.

We hope scouts apply for positions based on what they expect to learn while also contributing to the Troop. Before proceeding please think about the following quotes on leadership and excellence.

Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody expects of you.

Henry Ward Beecher

Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions.

Harold S. Geneen

Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well.

John W. Gardner

Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected.

Steve Jobs

Most of our scouts are very busy with academic, extracurricular and family obligations. Please read the job descriptions carefully and assess if you are ready to make the commitment to serve effectively during the upcoming period. If you have any questions please feel free to ask the SPL, SM or any ASM.

For purpose of rank advancement, please remember the requirement is to “serve actively” in a position, not to merely “hold a position” for a defined period of time. An inactive scout that simply “holds” a position could be considered to have not fulfilled, or only partially fulfilled, the “serving actively” requirement.

We encourage scouts to apply for positions, but holding a position is not required nor is it the only way to have an enriching Scouting experience. If you are willing to commit, you will be supported, coached and encouraged by both the youth and adult leadership to be successful!

Troop 266 Leadership Team Selection Process.

The following outlines the process and key dates for the upcoming position selections.

  1. Scoutmaster (SM) reviews selection process and timeline at Green Bar meeting. Eligible scouts wishing to be considered, or wanting to nominate someone, for Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) are asked to apply directly with the SM.

  2. Current SPL announces and explains selection process for all positions other than SPL at general Troop meeting.

  3. SM consults with current SPL and Jr. Scoutmasters regarding SPL candidates.

  4. SM meets with SPL candidate to discuss expectations and confirm commitment.

  5. SM presents SPL candidate to Green Bar members for confirmation by a confidential ballot to either accept or deny. A majority affirmative vote of Green Bar members present is required to confirm the SPL candidate. If the Green Bar does not confirm the candidate, the SM will then present another candidate by repeating steps 4 and 5 above.

  6. Scouts interested in applying for all other leadership positions present their completed application package to the newly confirmed SPL. Applications and related information will be available from the Troop website.

  7. The new SPL interviews all candidates individually with the support of the Jr Assistant Scoutmasters and the existing SPL

  8. New SPL then presents a proposed leadership team recommendation for feedback and approval by the SM.

  9. Final leadership team is announced at the next Court of Honor
