WHAT IS NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING (NYLT)?

Scouts are encouraged to attend NYLT if they are interested in developing their leadership skills and having a rewarding experience, but it is not required to be considered for any position in Troop 266,

NYLT is a seven day, outdoor training experience for Boy Scout youth leaders. The course has been developed by the National BSA Council and is offered by the San Gabriel council as the next step in building the Scout's leadership skills already developed within Troop 266.

Scouts learn the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment.

COST? Great news!!! Troop 266 will be offering scholarships for 2013 NYLT covering $250 of the $300 per scout which covers training, food, activities and camping for an entire week. Families need to pay the $300 to enroll in NYLT and then receive a $250 reimbursement from the Troop after the scout completes the training in August.

WHEN? August 4-10 (applications start in Feb) - TRASK SCOUT CAMP

HOW TO APPLY? Interested scouts that meet the following minimum qualifications must apply/notify to Mr Rolan (send email or call if you can not attend Troop meeting). Troop 266 can send a maximum of eight scouts, but its subject to availability.

Minimum qualifications (if not sure still apply)

  • 13+ yrs of age and 1st class rank or higher

  • Actively served in a position of responsibility

  • Active in the Troop (meetings and outings)

  • Can commit to attend for the full week Aug 4th to 10th (make sure you will be available)

  • Have not attended NYLT in the past

If more than eight qualified scouts apply, final selections will be made by the Scoutmaster based on seniority in leadership positions, level of participation in the Troop and demonstrated Scout Spirit.

Selected scouts need to complete their application package and have the Scoutmaster sign/endorse. Scouts then register online and submit endorsed application forms at Smiser.
