High Adventure Cycling Trip - Memorial Day Weekend

ACTIVITY: 100+ mile two day cycling adventure (50+ miles a day)

ROUTE: Start about seven miles north of San Simeon. Ride south over two days passing through Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach and concluding in Orcutt. The route is mainly along Highway 1 and other roads/highways. See updated maps attached below for more detail.

Total distance: 100+ miles over two days

DIFFICULTY: Moderate for riders with proper preparation. Intended as a two day ride, but scouts and parents have the option to ride one day only (50 miles).

DATES: Memorial Day Weekend – May 25 to 27th

Friday May 25 - Drive 3.5 hours to the Holiday Inn Express in San Luis Obispo - this hotel will be used for both nights.

Saturday May 26 - Drive 1 hour north to a point about seven miles north of San Simeon. Ride 50+ miles along the coast then inland to San Luis Obispo.

Sunday May 27 - Ride 50+ miles from San Luis Obispo to ORCUTT Community Park. Drive 3 hours home Sunday evening.

Monday May 28th (Memorial Day) - Rest and recover at home

REQUIREMENTS:

Complete Cycling merit badge requirements

Bike must pass inspection and scout successfully complete road safety test

(Any exceptions must be pre-approved by Scoutmaster)

COSTS:

Lodging - $95 per scout for two nights. Four scouts to a room. Scouts and parents must stay in different rooms. Adults/families attending will be responsible for arranging their own lodging. Food - Complementary hotel breakfast. Bring money for lunch on the road and for restaurant dinners.

Transportation - $25 for scouts not accompanied by a driving parent. ("gas money")

AWARD: Scouts that complete the ride will be eligible for the riding portion of the National Outdoor Badge.
