A race that existed on Vallene prior to the arrival of the creator gods. Their power over the world comes from an internal process, and operates entirely outside the confines of the rules of traditional magic. This race, known to modern scholars as the Correa, largely fled underground when the creator gods arrived, afraid for their lives. Once the humanoid races of the world were created, they were certain their time on Vallene was at an end, and they resolved never to leave their subterranean homes again. Not all Correa followed the precepts, however, and some did interact with the humanoids of the modern world. There are rumors of their alien power creeping into bloodlines among some families, but their power is often subtle and unnoticed, so it has remained rumor.
Some Correan cities remain, either as ruins, or hidden deep within Vallene. These include Berethia, near Trammel on the southern continent, Varixxia, far in the northeastern reaches of the Northern Wastes, and a location known as The Cradle.
Recently, a Correan facility by the name of Ascentia was uncovered near Cadun, on the northern continent. It appears to have been a research lab meant for creating weaponized Correan soldiers to fight the children of I'noc and Rannoc, and perhaps the gods themselves. The experiment went awry, sadly, and the remaining Correans used their power to seal the lab in hopes that its content would remain hidden, the world safe from what they had unintentionally created. Lord Somon and his companions opened the lab and destroyed the warped creature within. Ascentia provided the group with the location of three other Correan facilities (The Cradle - an astronomical research center hidden away in a place now known as the Valley of Remnants, Hurin - a biological research facility beneath what is now Vrue, and Vorca'non - a massive manufacturing facility located near Najra, in the Blood Wastes).
The party's forray into Vorca'non reveals new truths about the Correans. They discovered massive tunnels beneath Vallene, and built one or more of their facilities (including Vorca'non) to use the tunnels for swift travel beneath the surface. The group discovers the facility is mainly built to manufacture these transport cars which can be powered with the Correans' natural psionic powers. In addition, Vorca'non holds another secret: a derelict craft from the stars. The Correans tore it apart, but did not figure out how it worked.
The Correan oral history is told in 9 parts:
The Long Dark refers to the time before Correan reckoning. The Shard refers to the spacefaring crystalline race that implanted their seed in Vallene's core in the earliest days of Correan reckoning, when the world was new. Beasts of Flame and Fury are the ancient dragons, great beasts born in the primeval flames and volcanic fury stirred by the first pulsing of the embryonic shardling. Ancients of Rime and Reason, the frost giants of old, rose in the north, and clashed with the dragons until they summoned a catastrophic, world-altering blizzard. Vallene entered a temperate age, forcing the dragons to retreat below the surface, as the giants forests shrank and forced their population to dwindle. Birth Among the Blessed is the most important age in Correan history: their peak. With the world-shattering powers of both the giants and dragons subdued, Vallene flourished. The flora and fauna diversified and bloomed across a growing world. The Correa spread across Vallene's surface, enjoying peace and prosperity. The Coming of the Invaders signified the beginning of the end. Twin beings from beyond came to Vallene, and saw its great beauty and potential, and chose it for themselves. They created humanity, elves, and dwarves, and the Correan cities began to fall. For all their works, the Correa could not stand against the new rulers of Vallene, and they retreated belowground. Blood Falls from Skies and World in Flames are the Correan names for the period referred to by most as the Godsblood War. As the world was bathed in the magical blood of the dead "gods", the Correans took to the surface, hoping to retake Vallene from the progeny of the fallen. Instead, they found a world at war with itself. The magical blood seeped into Vallene, and all who dwelled upon it. Magical power abounded, wild and chaotic, yet untamed by knowledge or wisdom, and it tore the world apart. The Correan people saw the end coming, and formed a plan: they would pilgrimage to the Heart of Vallene, a near-mythic place spoken of in ancient stories, where one could walk into the very center of the world, and commune with Vallene itself. They believed this, and only this, could save their people and their world.
