The Marauder’s true name is Velleretrix, and he is a powerful sorcerer, and an Avar himself, having long since taken the soul of the great blue dragon that once roamed the sea. He has forsaken the outside world, but he cares for his people, and until he can find a successor to serve in his place, he remains in the mortal world. He is old and has seen the dangerous rise of the Empire, hence his willingness to work with the Arridemian rebellion. Initially, he acts the part of a traditional pirate, but sufficient discussion and proof of their prowess will entice him to reveal his true nature.
In truth, while the Marauder was once a man, he and Velleretrix, one of the great dragons of Vallene, merged their souls many centuries ago. Before the merging, Velleretrix roamed The Great Pass, forever anchored to living below the waves. It was only in linking to the Marauder's sorcerous powers that Velleretrix realized the potential in their cooperation. While the Marauder no longer leaves his home in the cove, times of great need might motivate him to do so.
The Marauder/Vellertrix perished from wounds received from Breaker, the Imperial flagship during the Battle for Arridem.
The new Marauder has ascended. In the last two months, he has continued working with King Trynam of Faren in absence of the rebel council and the Burritt family. Considerable resources have been dedicated to building a new fleet from Farenian wood, and recruiting in the darker parts of the ports of Olin and Feltaris.
