Activity 2

An inclined plane is a flat surface whose endpoints are at different heights.

By moving an object up an inclined plane rather than completely vertically, the amount of force required is reduced, at the expense of increasing the distance the object must travel.

  • We call the weight of the object the load and it can be identified with the letter L.

  • The effort we have to apply to move the object is the force F.

  • The height of the inclined plane is the vertical distance between the lowest and the highest points of the ramp. We represent this distance with an h.

  • The path the object must follow if we want to use this simple machine is the length (l) of the inclined plane.
