AIR CADET LEAGUE OF CANADA (OPC)
The Air Cadet League of Canada, Ontario Provincial Committee, celebrates over 75 years of providing community resources and funding for items not provided by the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Government of Canada within the Air Cadet program in Ontario. The rewarding community-based activities are designed to help youth become more self confident, develop leadership skills, improve communication skills, and teach self-discipline through challenging training.
Mission, since 1941, is to support and enable youth to meet the challenges of modern society, through a dynamic, community-based program that is accessible to all young citizens of Ontario.
Vision is to prepare our youth to become the leaders of tomorrow through a set of fun, challenging, well organized and safe activities through living shared values of loyalty, professionalism, mutual respect, and integrity with a goal of developing great citizens and encouraging volunteerism and community!
The primary operational responsibilities of the OPC are to:
Oversee and support the local Sponsoring Committees for 120 Air Cadet Squadrons, including the sharing of best practices.
Conduct of nationally-mandated activities, such as Registration & Screening of Volunteers, and administration of the Air Cadet Service Medal.
Fund and support the Air Cadet Flying Program, primarily through the purchase and major repairs of a glider and tow-plane fleet.
Conduct an annual province-wide lottery raffle, subject to a license from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission.
Coordinate the application and merit-ranking process for National (6-week) summer courses, including Power and Glider Pilot Scholarships.
Fund and conduct specific portions of the Air Cadet Program, such as International Air Cadet Exchange Hosting.
Represent the League – at the Provincial level – to its DND and Aviation & Aerospace Partners, all other stakeholders in the Program, and the public and opinion makers.
Recognize the achievements of volunteer members, Cadets, and military partners.
ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION
Branch 116 (Sir Arthur Currie Branch), Royal Canadian Legion have been active supporters of this squadron since its formation. They have generously allowed the 3 Striker Squadron to use their facilities for training, banquets and BBQs. They provide both monetary and resource support for squadron training and several Squadron awards are funded and presented by Br 116. In turn, cadets participate in Legion community activities, including Remembrance Day parades, war graves maintenance and the sale of poppies.
The Royal Canadian Legion is Canada’s largest veterans’ association. It is comprised of more than 300,000 members in over 1,400 branches across Canada. The Legion has assumed a major responsibility for perpetuating the tradition of Remembrance in Canada and organizes and conducts the annual National Poppy and Remembrance Campaign. From providing advocacy support to affordable housing and outreach programs, the Legion makes a difference in the daily lives of Veterans and their families. Their community support extends to youth through education, sport and leadership training. As part of its Youth Program, the Legion sponsors the “Outstanding Cadet of the Year Award” at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa, and is the official sponsor of approximately 120 air cadet squadrons across Canada.
ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE ASSOCIATION
The members of the 427 (London) Wing, Royal Canadian Air Force Association have been ardent supporters of the Air Cadet squadrons in London and surrounding area (including 3 Striker) for many years. Executive members regularly visit squadrons and participate in ceremonial activities, maintaining the tradition of the founding partner, the Royal Canadian Air Force.
DEPARTMENT OF NATIONAL DEFENCE
The financial contribution of the Department of National Defence (DND) is to fund the instructional staff (officers of the Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC) and civilian instructors), the core curriculum, cadet uniforms, summer camps and scholarship courses which include gliding and power pilot licences and foreign exchanges.
Our local Squadron Sponsoring Committee (SSC) annually undertakes to provide: accommodation, a supplementary budget, asset insurance, equipment and funds for optional activities not covered by Department of National Defence. The Air Cadet program would not be available to the community without DND making this substantial investment in our youth. Seven decades of building Canada’s future leaders is but one of the accomplishments made due to the sustained support of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces and for which everyone involved with the program says a sincere “Thank You”.
From Cadets Canada, Renewal
Here are the defining principles which characterize the Cadet program:
Invite all Canadian Youth. Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger Programs are open to all youth age 12 to 18. There will be no artificial barriers developed which preclude participation based on gender, race, culture, religion, education, socioeconomic status or ability, and all reasonable efforts to accommodate will be made.
Instill Canadian Military Values. The development of the Cadet and JCR Programs is guided by the best of Canadian military values and ethics which focus on respecting the dignity of all people, serving Canada before self, and obeying and supporting lawful authorities. Additionally, Cadets and JCRs will gain a better appreciation of the specific values of duty, loyalty, integrity, courage, stewardship, and excellence.
Develop Citizenship, Leadership, and Fitness. The Cadet and JCR Programs help participants progressively develop into adults who contribute positively to Canadian society as leaders, while instilling a lifelong appreciation of health and fitness.
Balance Safety and Challenge. Youth and their parents will have confidence that the activities and events are challenging, yet safe and that the adults leading the program are of unquestionably high moral character.
Leave a Positive Lifelong Impact. It is imperative that Cadets and JCRs remember the experience positively to help guide their development as productive Canadians.
A donation from LIBRO was used to purchase the musical instruments for the 3 Striker Squadron Brass & Woodwind Band.
