W04: Project One Presentations

Welcome to TECH 120. This is a 3 credit hour course and meets for 2 hours and 50 minutes weekly. The syllabus describes the course:

Students in this course will engage in critical analysis of real-world problems and global challenges. They will demonstrate the ability to recognize opportunity and to take initiative in developing solutions applying the principles of human-centered design. Students will be able to communicate effectively and to work well on teams. Problems and solutions will be examined from societal, cultural, and ethical perspectives.

Objectives:

The objectives of this section are to learn:

  • design presentation #1
  • constructive critique
  • gallery walk
  • prototype video creation
  • project 2 team selection

Design presentation #1

Each two/three person team will have 90 seconds to present their prototype and answer the following questions.

Who are the team members?

What is the name of your design?

What are the unique features of your design?

How does your prototype highlight the unique design features?

What would you anticipate as the cost of this new design?

What would you do to make the design more functional?

What would you do to make the prototype more functional?

Constructive critique

A the completion of the gallery walk, students will provide feedback to each group in an open forum. Keys to constructive feedback include:

  • Sandwich Feedback method (positive-improve-positive)
  • Focus on the situation, not the person
  • Be specific with your feedback
  • Comment on things which can be actioned upon
  • Give recommendations on how to improve
  • Don’t make assumptions

Gallery walk

After all presentations are complete, we will conduct a gallery walk. The gallery walk is like speed dating, in that each student will have a set amount of time to meet with the designers and ask questions and seek clarification of the design and the design process.

Setup

  1. Clear the tables from the front of the room.
  2. Bring two tables to the front and place them next to each other as shown in the image below (tables will be parallel to the whiteboard).
  3. Place the prototypes equidistance from each other on the table.
  4. Each team member will stand on opposite sides of their prototype.

Process

  1. Before round one begins, each team member on the top row, will shift counter-clockwise one position.
  2. The instructor will start a two minute timer.
  3. In two minutes, the team member in the top row will provide feed back to the student in the bottom row who will capture the comment on a sticky note and place it next to the prototype
  4. After two minutes, the top row will again shift counter-clockwise one position and the process will repeat until everyone in the top row returns to the original position.
  5. After round one is complete, we will repeat steps 1 through 4 for the bottom row and the top row will collect the feedback on sticky notes.
  6. After both rounds are complete, the instructor will set another 10 minute time and all students can move to any model and provide additional feedback to the designers on a sticky note.

Feedback

  1. After the "free-for-all" round, students will return to their design and take 10 minutes to evaluate feedback, capture themes, and discuss implementation of ideas.
  2. The instructor will then facilitate a feedback session so teams can share what they learned.
  3. We work through a 3 ↑ 3 ↓ review of the Gallery Walk process.

Prototype video creation

As a team, compare the storyboards you prepared for today's class. Select one or combine the two to create a 90 second video that also includes the following:

  • Introduction to your prototype (name, need, etc)
  • Introduce the team members
  • Demonstrates the function of the design
  • Highlights unique features of the design
  • Includes a "call-to-action"

TIP: You may want to update a storyboard to includes these additional components. Below is a resource sheet to assist in the creation of videos.

Project 2 team selection

Two weeks ago, each of you posted your interviews. One of the questions asked what each student would bring to their team. In this assignment, you will review all posts and create your dream team. Go back and read all of the posts and identify the five people you would choose for your team if you could select your dream team. You will submit these names to the instructor but your selection will not be shared with anyone else. The instructor will use this information to create teams for the next project.
