I am originally from the southeastern state of India known as Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu or Tamilnad state (தமிழ்நாடு; country of Tamil speaking people) is formerly known as the Madras Presidency and Madras State, during British Raj and after Indian Independence, respectively. Tamil (தமிழ்) is an ancient language of the Indian sub-continent and belongs to the Dravidian branch. Its origin is different from that of Sanskrit which belongs to the Indo-Iranian-Germanic branch.
Our immediate ancestors are from Thanjavur district (aka, Tanjore; the rice bowl of India) now it is in the Nagapatinam district of Tamil Nadu. My ancestors came to Thanjavur district as book-keepers for the Vedharaniyeswarar Temple in Vedaraniam (வேதாரண்யம்) also known as, Thirumaraikkadu (திருமறைக்காடு). Prior to moving to Vedaraniam (alternate spellings: Vedharanyam, Vedharaniyam) our ancestors (Saiva Vellalar; சைவ வேளாளர்;Shaiva Vellalla) were from the Ramanatha Puram district in central Tamil Nadu.
In India I lived and studied in Vedaraniam, Thirukkattu Palli, Poondi (near Tanjavur) and Chennai. Later I studied and lived in Bangalore, Karnataka state and Hyderabad, Andra Pradesh state (now in Telangana). Then I moved to the United States of America in late eighties. In the US, I have lived in the northeastern state of Massachusetts and now I live in the southeastern state of Florida. I now work at Florida State University as a structural biologist. Bhanu is from Chennai (aka Madras). She has studied in Chennai and Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu and worked in Chennai, India. Now she works as a Library Information Specialist at Leon County Public Library.
My family has lived in the US for about twenty-six years and we are involved with the International, Asian, Indian, and Tamil communities of Tallahassee, Florida, USA. Between 2005 and 2013, Somasundaram was the Web Master, General Secretary, President, and Trustee for India Association of Tallahassee. Since 2006, he has been the Director of Media, Chair-Elect, and the Chairman for the Asian Coalition of Tallahassee. He is a co-founder of the Tallahassee Tamil Sangam. Somasundaram is a member of Tallahassee Human Relations Council and Leon County Science Advisory Committee, and a faculty advisor to FSU’s Hindu Students Association and Health Educated Asian Leaders, both FSU RSOs. Bhanu was the Vice-President of Library Staff Association, VTS is the immediate past President of BHPS-SGA and a Service Scholar. He recently was inducted into 2015 Class of Seminole Torchbearers Organization. As a family, we routinely volunteer, organize, and conduct cultural programs that highlight the positive aspects of the Indian customs, culture, tradition, and language.
